Matangi Kavacam

Sri Sri Devi Matangi is popularly referred to as the Chwasa Dyo (छ्वास द्यो).  She represents the power of absolution, the finality. Consequently, She was located at the waste collection sites on street corners and courtyards.  Yes! There is a philosophical underpinning to waste, its collection, the presiding deity and final absolution.

This prayer is the kavaca (armour) of Devi Matangi.

Mahaluxmi Astakam

Mahalaxmi and Laxmi are two different manifestations of the Divine Power.  Mahalaxmi is the life force of the universe. Laxmi is conventionally the consort of Bhagwan Vishnu.

In the act of creation, Mahalaxmi is the Mistress of the North-East Quadrant.  Hence, kings of yore placed temples dedicated to this Devi in the northeastern border of their respective states. Such temples are extant in present day Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Chinnamastastavam

Sri Sri Devi Chinnamasta is common to the Vajrayana and the Shakta traditions. She is popularly referred to as मो मरु द्यो – the headless one.

The Devi is a representation of the power of sustenance. She keeps the physical world going. She nourishes the spiritual world.

Nourishment and sustenance are important to the successful management of a nation’s affairs. Hence, kings and high officers of the state have taken a particular interest in propitiating this Devi.

The prayer below evokes the power of sustenance.  Historically, astrologers have prescribed this prayer as an antidote to those suffering from the maladies of the Ketu dasa (केतु दशा).

Mrityunjaya Stotram

currently @ musée de Dahlem, Berlin

Sri Sri Mrityunjaya is the representation of the immortal. An essential aspect of Bhagwan Shiva, Mrityunjaya is untouched by time, and, therefore, by implication, does not decay or degrade.

This prayer is an affirmation of our own immortality, that of our essence, our soul. It also recognizes our physical manifestation and acknowledges that the body is very much subject to decay and disease. The prayer evokes the power of immortality to aid in preventing ailments from afflicting our physical bodies and in preventing disquiet from troubling our emotional selves.
